Harold&MOD: fashion

This lovely local brand (Harold&MOD) has been storming the fashion gates of Birmingham all month long with their campaign theme “Summer Camp”. Chad and I spent an afternoon a few weeks ago shooting a retro fashion video. Milo and Heidi are the brains behind the sizzling styles we shot as well as the video’s storyline and set. I captured some photos throughout the day as the outfits and set were photo opps too good to pass up. The video will be premiering online soon.

Working with such beautiful people made for effortless glamor shots. The makeup artist (Helen) did a flawless job! I didn’t have to touch-up a single portrait.

Between hopping from one location to the next, I didn’t have time to linger at each set to shoot. The sun was quickly going down by the time we got to a farm, which was our last location.

Second Avenue North: street market

It’s the place to be in Birmingham!

2ndAveNsidewalksale-124

Saturday was the second sidewalk sale on 2nd Ave North downtown. According to this cool article by Big Communications, “The goal is to promote local businesses and raise funds for branded signage and street furnishings.” My goal was to check out the awesome vintage stuff for sale and showcase each vendor to show off their good taste and plain awesomeness.

1) What’s on Second:

To say “We carry everything that has ever been made in one convenient shopping location!” is not far from the truth. at all. I can get lost treasure-hunting in the store for hours! The odd, the glamorous, the gadgets! Oh my.

These two lovely ladies were sharing a spot full of snazzy vintage clothing and accessories.

3) Harold & MOD:

Milo and Heidi are an unstoppable force of retro-wonderful-goodness. They are responsible for the pop-up vintage shops happening around town, and for the cool outfits that regularly show up on my Instagram feed.

4) Faith Skate Supply:

I’m not a boarder, or whatever you call someone who is into (or even remotely good at) skate-boarding, but this vendor had some super-sweet finds.

“Our inspiration is rooted in what first brought us together — live music. With a vision to reciprocate that to the public, our work reflects performance fused with live paintings, clothing, jewelry and Alabama‚Äôs lifestyle and heritage.”

Susan Shoemaker’s artwork is charming, to say the least! The whimsical designs are adorable and original. Use the link above to purchase work on her etsy store!

7) Charm:

One of my favorite stores….anywhere…ever! My husband knows where to shop for me on almost any occasion. Charm is mostly new and vintage jewelry and accessories, but during the sidewalk sale there were many other goodies available.

8) Ono Ice:

Rebecca has truly found her niche in the world of food stands. “Ono Ice is a mobile shave ice company serving handmade, naturally-flavored Hawaiian shave ice. All flavors are made from scratch with natural ingredients. No artificial colors or flavors.” …and they.are.amazing. She shows up at all kinds of events and functions around town, and I am always so happy to see her! Most shaved ice is made with alot of gross food dye and fake flavors, and it makesmesohappy that I can enjoy a snowcone on a hot day without the intake of nasty artificial ingredients AND it tastes a billion times better. Way to go Rebecca for being awesome!

All in all the sale was a great way to raise money for a good cause, and I am so proud of Birmingham’s creative community coming together to make important things happen. I’m definitely looking forward to the next one!

Ocean Liner: band

Ben and Alison Smolin are local Birmingham, Alabama musicians and have just released their first self-titled acoustic album. as husband and wife rockstars, they have spent alot of time over the past few years making music together around town in their indie rock band. Ocean Liner is their latest project, and it boasts of some beautiful and raw lyrics and emotions.

the Smolins decided they wanted some simple and realistic photographs to use in preparation for the album’s release. i found the honesty of this particular shoot both refreshing and compelling.

I can personally recommend listening to their new album. Also, check out this video of one of the tracks.

The Smolin’s home is an older house in a neighborhood right down the road from where I live. Older houses have a mysterious power to make everything inside them photogenic. Hardwood floors, chipping paint, and odd treasures are scattered all-throughout and beg for representation on an image sensor.

Oh, and for the record, any car that has blue vinyl interior and a cassette tape player deserves to be part of any self respecting musician’s photo shoot…
